Interviews with more than 50 law enforcement and political figures reveal that as District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has gained longevity and power, she also has drawn considerable criticism over the way she’s used that power.

Discussions with about a dozen of her deputies plus leaders of the country’s largest law enforcement unions indicate she is generally liked personally but not always respected in terms of charging decisions, budget priorities and political posturing.

Among defense attorneys the verdict on Dumanis is mixed. Some like her accessibility and willingness to consider their arguments; others assail her for a win-at-all-costs policy that keeps her from admitting mistakes and pursuing the truth.
